Alyssa-Joy Spence

“When a new movement just “clicks” for a person, or they overcome a hurdle of any kind, that’s my absolute favorite.”

Biography.

Alyssa was introduced to powerlifting in 2016 and promptly fell in love with the sport! In powerlifting, she finds a sport that is both solitary and in a group that can be done with minimal equipment and yet dramatically change your life. All you need is a barbell, a rack, and some weights! It is empowering like only an individual sport can be, but with such a positive and encouraging community that it doesn’t feel individual at all. Alyssa left her first competition with new PBs and friends, and a strong desire to learn more and help grow the sport.

Since then, Alyssa has moved to New Zealand and completed a PhD looking at the relationship between flexibility and strength in powerlifters. She has completed a coaching internship with TSA and is delighted to now work with the TSA team as a junior coach!

Alyssa has been teaching and coaching in various sports for over fifteen years and has studied exercise science for eight of those years. She loves anatomy and biomechanics, but most of all she loves problem-solving and helping people achieve their goals.

Her favorite thing about coaching is seeing the joy in athletes when they accomplish something meaningful. When a new movement ‘clicks’ or they get a PR or overcome a hurdle…as a coach you get to witness all the wins, big and small, along the journey!

As an athlete, she’s hoping this is the year she wins New Zealand Nationals
